There used to be a time where I would cynically flick through my Instagram feed looking at all the sunset pictures thinking, ‘There’s no way any of these can be real.’
But then I went to California.
For some reason, my mind never associated The Golden State with epically gorgeous sunsets. Colourful, bright sunsets were always a thing that were found in some hard-to-reach South Pacific island which probably cost the earth to get to, weren’t they?
But, since coming home and doing a spot of research, it actually makes complete sense. The topography of the state lends itself to stunning spectacles of light, with sun rays pouring over mountain ranges and peeking through cityscapes to make them appear even more incredible.
San Francisco Sunsets
When I was in San Francisco, I never went out with the intention of taking photos of the sunsets. They always just seemed to sneak up on me while I was out and about on various trips.
It’s pretty impossible to pinpoint where I saw the best sunsets in San Francisco. In Sausalito, a city in the San Francisco Bay area just across the Golden Gate bridge, the swirls of pink were hypnotic; while it was during our night trip to Alcatraz that we were shocked by just how gorgeous the cityscape looked against the colourful evening sky. Here’s a selection of the best photos I took – which one is your favourite?
Los Angeles
Much like my time in San Francisco, I never went out in search of the best sunsets in Los Angeles. Some of the most gorgeous evening skies were seen while we were travelling, although I would have loved to have seen the sun setting while on Venice Beach or up by the Hollywood sign!
These final two photos were taken on our drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles – proof, if ever, that it’s always worth taking those front seats on the coach!
I have heart shaped eyes over these stunning sunsets! BTW Isn’t Sausalito cute? I’m so glad that we included it in our trip x
Oh wow, Cali looks like it wins in the sunset stakes. SO BEAUTIFUL! I think my favourite one from those pictures is the one with the quaint blue building with the white benches and red flowers 🙂 I’m a sucker for a sunset though so all of them are pretty amazing! I remember my favourite one was a sunset I saw in Noosa as I was heading back from Fraser Island. I swear I’ve never seen the sky so colourful!
