I’m currently packing for my Big Christmas Trip To New York™ in just over a week’s time and getting far too excited about planning my outfits. In my head I’m going to strut my stuff around Central Park looking like Serena van der Woodsen – but in reality I feel like it’s just going to be so cold I’ll be wrapped up in thermals and looking more like a potato.
But I have a few more important things to worry about – y’see, on just about every trip I take I forget the same blinking things. Every. Single. Time.
No matter how much I plan, write out packing lists and start packing two weeks before I go, I will almost 100% forget to take some pretty important things along with me.
(Granted it’s not as bad as that time I lost my passport in Havana, but it’s still pretty annoying).
So, to try and drum it into my head just how much I need to remember to pack these things, I thought I’d pop them all in one place below for me to refer back to…
1. A small bag for day-to-day use
It’s all well and good packing a small suitcase to take on the plane with you, but it’s not like you’re going to want to use that suitcase to carry around your purse/mobile/camera on holiday each day, are you?
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to: a) buy an emergency tote bag, b) use my boyfriend’s pockets as my bag (turns out it’s really annoying when someone asks for their camera every 2 minutes, who’d have thought it?), or c) had to just carry everything around in a stylish carrier bag.
I try to pack a small foldaway bag for daytime use (and, if I’m being REALLY organised, maybe even a clutch for going out in the evenings).
I mean, as far as things to forget to pack go, toothpaste isn’t the worst because you can generally pick some up for quite cheap wherever you are in the world.
It’s just annoying that I always seem to realise I’ve forgotten to pack my toothpaste just as I go to clean my teeth in the evening. And all the shops are closed. And I’m ready for bed.
It’s just so frustrating that I can forget something I literally use twice a day…
My boyfriend gets annoyed about the number of pyjamas I own. Except I have a very good reason why I own approx 92449 pairs: because I always forget to pack some and have to go out and buy another pair whenever I’m abroad.
Usually I can make do with a t-shirt and some pants, but if I’m away for longer than a few days I like to get comfy. There’s just something nice about coming back to your hotel in the evening and climbing into some fresh pyjamas, you know what I mean?
4. Plug adapters
Or, if I *do* remember to pack one of these, it’s usually the wrong one. Who knew Switzerland had a different type of plug to the rest of Europe?! Can confirm these are definitely not cheap things to buy last-minute at the airport.
5. Multi-plug extension
Sticking with the plug theme, here’s another one I always forget. Roma from Roaming Required blew my mind when she made me realise just how useful having one of these is. You can charge multiple items at one time! Using only *one* plug adapter! It never occurred to me before then that these could be useful outside of the home – sadly it’s never occurred to me since because I, uh, never pack one. Sorry, Roma.
Plasters are the things I always forget I need until I’m away, walking 20,000+ steps a day and have feet covered with blisters.
I’ll never forget the time I went into a shop in LA to ask if they had any plasters – and it took a good few minutes (and some confused looks from the shop staff) until I remembered they were called bandaids over the pond.
Of all the things on this list, this is probably the one thing I shouldn’t really forget. I mean, they’re so paper-thin it’s not like they take up a lot of room in the suitcase…
+ one for my boyfriend
My boyfriend has a habit of always forgetting to pack swim shorts – which is a bit of a problem as I’m a typical Pisces and always try to book a hotel that’s got a swimming pool.
Earlier this year we went to Paris and he forgot his swim shorts. We managed to find dozens of shops in Paris that sell them, so that wasn’t a problem – except the fashion in continental Europe seems to be for really tight, really tiny swim shorts. Ian was not impressed…
Oh, and the other time he forgot his swim shorts? In Tromso. In the middle of January. We were traipsing around shops in the middle of winter trying to find swim shorts for HOURS. Luckily we eventually found some (and they were on sale because #OffSeason) but damnit Ian!!
Is there anything you always forget to pack when you go away?!
